Teaching Tips December 2011 |
by Dr. Rurh Beechick Do you teach, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want?” And after the child says that well, you follow up with the next verse? That is bit-by-bit memory, and it is probably the method most families use. Far better is the whole memory system. By the whole system, you read through the entire 23rd Psalm each day. You pause now and then for the children to fill in a word. Later they fill in phrases and then longer and longer parts. Eventually you just say, “The Lord is my….” and the children fill in the rest. Much research shows this whole memory approach to be far more effective. It helps people remember longer. It helps us understand better. And it is a less boring way to work on a passage. You can do a little research and try this out in your family. See how easy it is to do. And be amazed at how much your children remember. But be prepared. One teenager who learned about the whole memory system liked using it. He went on to memorize practically the entire New Testament. Keep a list of what your children have memorized, and review once a week at first. Then review once a month. Later, review occasionally. 210 Words To view more 'Teaching Tips' Articles please 'Log In' and visit the 'Achives' page. |
