Why Not a National Curriculum?

In response to the Shanker Institute’s “A Call For Common Content” Manifesto and the US Department of Education’s initiative to develop national curriculum and assessments based on national standards, a wide range of educators, concerned citizens, and think tank representatives have countered with their own “manifesto” that explains why a national curriculum is bad for America.

What is noteworthy is that the signatories represent an array of political parties, government leaders, and education institutions. All recognize the need for change, but insist that a national curriculum will limit the innovation necessary to overhaul the education system. Instead, they call for accountability at the grassroots level, where the failure hits home the hardest.
