The first few weeks of Spring brought some new beginnings and some refreshment. At the end of March, the SOAR Act reauthorizing and expanding the popular and highly successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (DCOS) sailed through the House, despite opposition from the Obama administration. Unfortunately, it faces a tougher challenge in the Senate, where passage is still uncertain. Indiana’s House likewise overwhelmingly passed a major piece of legislation that expanded the state’s school voucher program, making it one of the broadest in the nation. It would provide families with a portion of their child’s public school funding to use for private schooling. The amount of money received would be based on income levels. Unlike the SOAR bill, this voucher bill is expected to pass the Indiana Senate easily. Michelle Rhee, former D.C. Schools Chancellor and a supporter of DCOSP stated, “We have the opportunity in Indiana today for this state to be leading the change across the rest of the nation.” 161 Words |
