Neurodevelopmental Tip of the Month: Egg Carton Matching Game

This activity is designed to develop your child's visual concentration, apart from reading and listening. This vital underlying skill is used in math, spelling, and reading. Begin with a few items and then increase the number of items to challenge the child's visual concentration and memory.

Materials needed:
Two empty egg cartons (for younger children, use smaller half-dozen size cartons; for older children use the dozen-size cartons)
Small household items that can fit in each holder (make sure the items are objects the child will recognize)

For younger children:
Place one small object in each of the six holders. Examples are a penny, piece of cereal, rubber band or dice. Show the items to the child for one minute and then close the lid. Have your child go and find the same objects to put in the second empty carton. The items do not have to be in the same position in the second carton.

For older children:
Using the larger dozen-size carton, begin with six items as above. As the student masters this number of objects, increase the number of items. To increase the challenge with age, you can also reduce the amount of time the student can view the objects. The final challenge is to have the student not only match the objects, but place them in the same order as in the first box.
