Teaching Tips March 1, 2009 |

Education is more than just learning facts and figures; it is more than academics. It includes instilling values, character, and discipline. One activity that is especially helpful is to have students put together a Character Notebook. The contents will vary with the child’s age, with younger children drawing pictures or cutting out pictures while older students can record their own findings and observations. Get a one- to two-inch binder with a clear vinyl cover that allows the child to insert his/her own cover design. Each page of the notebook can feature a particular character trait. The page should include a formal definition and then the child’s own wording of the meaning. At the very least, the child should be able to write (or dictate) a sentence describing someone with this trait. Whenever the student comes across a person who exemplifies this trait, record it. This can be an actual person or a character from a book, video, or TV program. You can integrate history, science, and the arts into the notebook as well, listing any person you have studied under the appropriate character trait. The person can be a positive example of the trait or a negative example, modeling what happens when a person doesn’t have that trait. The student can also journal any events or experiences (his/her own or others) that relate to the character trait. You can incorporate Bible into the notebook, adding scripture verses that describe a person with the trait or passages that talk about the characteristic. Over time, this collection becomes an excellent reminder of how vital character is to everyday life KEY WORDS: character, notebook |
