Art Institute Treasure Hunt

This activity can be used to encourage students, particularly younger children, to take more time to observe the artwork during a field trip to the local art institute. It can be adapted for any type of field trip.

Each child is given a clipboard with a list of the items in the treasure hunt. For younger children, tie a pen to the clipboard so that it is always handy. It’s usually best to keep the list to one page, where all the child has to do is put a check on the blank in front of the item or circle the item. Putting the list in alphabetical order gives the child further practice in this skill.

Here’s some suggestions for your list of items to search for in the paintings and artwork:

  • items that each child enjoys
  • animals
  • colors
  • letters
  • shapes
  • men, women, boys, girls
  • specific occupations (e.g. farmer)
  • specific scenery (e.g. mountains, skyscraper)
  • something totally unexpected or out of the ordinary (worth extra bonus points) – such as an actual piece of a building, gate, mummy, crown, meteor
Your list can be based on whatever you are learning. Each item is worth so many points, and the person with the most points wins (and possibly earns a reward). This helps to keep the children quiet as they hunt for the treasure items – they don’t want to tip off the others when they find something on the list. Everyone must stay in the same room or section of the art institute. In our case, if they followed the rules and kept quiet, I allowed each child to get a postcard in the art institute’s gift shop for their memory book. The child who won was allowed to pick out an inexpensive memento.
