by Deborah Smith Pegues, Harvest House, 2009 Recommended for high school students.
This handy “quick-read” offers etiquette Do's and Dont's for personal and professional success. Written by a former Fortune 500 VP, experienced certified public accountant, speaker, Bible teacher, certified behavioral consultant, and author of “30 Days to Taming Your Tongue,” it presents a unique blend of business experience and godly wisdom to help older teens and adults become more polished in business and social settings. These life skills are vital for any person in any field.
Taken aback by the behavior of a fellow graduate student at a slightly up-scale restaurant, the author decided to take an extended etiquette course in the hope that it would increase her confidence and put her at a professional advantage. Her one fear was that she would become a social perfectionist. Instead, she learned that etiquette is centered on the principles of consideration, convenience, and common sense. Already involved in teaching people how to incorporate the Bible into their daily life, she couldn’t help see the connections. It isn’t so much about doing things right as doing the right thing. It’s an attitude expressed through our everyday actions – little things that show that people matter to us and to God. With this purpose in mind, the author does recognize that people are at various stages in their walk with God and may address a situation that some Christians will not encounter. If you are using this book with a younger high school student, you may want to read it together. Each section is filled with quick, information tips. Topics range from: wisdom for a winning personality, common courtesies, money matters, confident dining, making introductions and small talk, job interview etiquette, email etiquette, cell phone etiquette, giving and receiving gifts, dressing to impress, proper grammar and diction, dating protocol, gym etiquette, church etiquette, ten tips for teens, and social blunders.
