by Kara Durbin, Moody Press, 2001
The subheading explains the value of this handy, easy-to-use book: a topical guide for teachable moments. Psalm 119 says that God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet;
it lights the way we should go in training up our children. But when you’re in the middle of applying disciplinary action or get caught off-guard by a child’s
question, it’s not always easy to remember the appropriate passage from scripture. Seeing it in print or hearing you read it aloud from the Bible reminds parents
and children alike that we base our life and actions on the Word.
It’s never too early to show our children the habit of going to the Word to find the answers to life. Through simple discussions, Bible memorization, and activities that are adaptable to different ages and interests, you can use this book to answer questions and issues you encounter in everyday life. Or you can use it for family devotional time or as a prayer guide. Arranged alphabetically, each entry has a definition and corresponding scripture verses with references. A discussion guide suggests further activities and encourages comprehension. A “Take Action” section offers ways to put the lesson into practice, categorized by the parent, teen, child, and younger child as appropriate. Some lessons also include parenting tips. With topics such as anger, complaining, discipline, fairness, greed, giving, hope, love, sharing, talent, and worry, there’s something for everyone here. An index lists the topics covered in the book. As an added bonus, the appendix includes whole scripture passages that pertain to training up a child.
