In my workshops parents often ask me to define what is meant by critical thinking skills. Some people are a little “gun shy” about the word critical.
Does this mean our children should question everything, including our instructions and discipline?
No, the word critical simply refers to critiquing or analyzing. Critical thinking skills are tools our children can use to analyze and evaluate information. As you can imagine, there are several levels of skills that roughly correspond to the broad categories of primary, elementary, intermediate, and advanced education. Critical thinking skills are used in every subject, but are particularly vital in reading. These skills are so important that some curriculum designers are incorporating them into regular lessons. But how do we know if we have covered all the skills at the necessary level? To answer that need, I wrote the booklet, I Think, Therefore I Am: Critical Thinking Skills as part of the Homeschool Helps Series from HomeschoolingBooks.com. The booklet lists all the different topics involved in critical thinking and explains key terms. It also highlights the different materials available at each grade level so that you can plan a program for developing these vital skills. The last few pages have checklists that give the different skills for different aspects of critical thinking, such as study skills, problem-solving skills, evaluating literature, and social skills. The lists are grouped by general grade level so you can see what you can work on now, what you can expect from your children, and what you will need to work on in the future.
