Home School, High School, and Beyond
by Beverly L. Adams-Gordon

published by Castlemoyle Books; 165 pages, paperback with CD-ROM

The idea of homeschooling through high school can be a bit scary. Thinking about planning for four years can be overwhelming. How do I know what needs to be covered? How do I put it all together? What records do I need to keep? What about a transcript? We can get so caught up in the world’s way of doing high school that we overlook the important things like what is God’s plan for my child’s life?

The author helps us put things back into perspective and turns the whole exercise into a lesson for our children in time management, career exploration, and organizational skills. Unlike most high school manuals, this one is directed toward the student, to help them think through their interests, goals, and high school years.

The book is divided into ten sections that walk the student (and parents!) through each step of the planning process, offering practical, realistic tips for each grade. Sample topics: goals give you purpose, goals begin with God, high school terminology, creating a tentative high school plan, mapping out course schedules, planning individual courses, keeping records, and making plans for after high school.

Scattered throughout the book are reproducible forms that help you get the thoughts and plans down on paper. The forms are also on the CD-ROM, so you can print off as many copies as needed for your family.

The book is quite readable and contains exercises that help the student apply what has been discussed in the section. The author says that if the student completes these exercises that it is worth one-quarter credit. My children worked through the book during the summer between eighth and ninth grade. They weren’t ready to answer some of the questions about their future plans yet, but they were still able to come up with a working plan.
