Hero Tales series
by Dave and Neta Jackson

published by Baker Book House; 190 pages, paperback, four volumes available

I stumbled upon this series in my local Christian bookstore. Naturally, as a homeschooling mom, I am always vigilant, looking for anything that might prove useful to our homeschooling. I was looking for a devotional that the whole family could use together that had some substance to it.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t like the typical devotionals that are available. But I wanted something that I could dovetail with some of our other subjects. You know – something to encourage those “teachable moments.”

The book I purchased that day was volume 2, which in my brilliance led me to think that other volumes were available! We’ve since purchased the entire set. Here’s why.

Each volume features 15 Christians throughout history from various walks of life who serve as influential role models. Examples are: David Livingstone, Dwight Moody, Samuel Morris, Gladys Aylward, William and Catherine Booth, Peter Cartwright, Festo Kivengere, Eric Liddell, Watchman Nee, Florence Nightingale, Billy Graham, Clarence Jones, Luis Palau, Mother Teresa, John Bunyan, and William Wilberforce.

There are three short biographical sketches for each person. The sketch is a real-life story that highlights a particular character trait. The stories are the perfect length for a devotional. And there are a few comprehension questions to help students make personal applications and ensure that they are listening!

Written by the award-winning authors of the Trailblazer Books, these sketches can be used with any character curriculum, as part of a reading/comprehension program, with unit studies, or as a family devotional. A list of the character qualities covered in the sketches is given at the back of each book to make it easier to incorporate them into any curriculum.
