from Alpha Omega Publishing for use with the LifePac program
Alpha Omega, a Christian publishing company, has a series of diagnostic tests that are used to place students in their LifePac curriculum. Each grade level of the LifePacs has ten booklets for each of the core subjects, so the placement test is designed to tell you not only what grade level the child is at but which booklet to start with.
There are two levels available, one for elementary and junior high students (up to grade 8) and one for junior and senior high students (grades 7 through 12). The idea is to have the student begin testing one or two grade levels lower than the current grade and continue until the child gets bogged down and can’t answer any more questions. That’s why each diagnostic test covers so many grade levels. There are tests for Math, Language Arts, Science, History/Geography, and Bible. You can buy the tests individually or as a set. The first few pages of the booklet explain how to conduct the testing and score it. The Answer Key is included in the center of the booklet and is removed before testing. What’s nice about this is you can see the actual questions and what your child got right and wrong – unlike a lot of standardized tests. You can get a good idea of what the child knows and if there are any areas that need more work. You don’t have to be using the LifePacs for these tests to be helpful. They are long enough and follow a typical scope and sequence so that they can work for other programs as well. The math test is pretty straight forward and covers the usual questions at each grade level. So does the language arts, although we hadn’t covered some of the same spelling words yet. The science and history questions didn’t match what we used by grade level, so I just had my children answer any questions they knew throughout the whole booklet. This way I could see what areas we have to cover yet. KEY WORD: character, elective, life skills
