Countering Culture by David Noebel and Chuck Edwards
Published by Broadman & Holman, 183 pages, paperback with CD
(a separate video is available)

This worldview resource can be used on its own or as a sequel to the Thinking Like a Christian course by the same author. Whereas Thinking Like a Christian helps students develop a Christian worldview and understand its validity, this resource explains three other worldviews. But it doesn’t stop there. It presents the case against these alternatives based on what the anti-Christian philosophers themselves have written.

The material is definitely high school level, but it is written in way that most people can understand. This makes it a good “primer” for understanding other worldviews and giving young people the confidence to stand their ground with their Christian beliefs. In fact, the whole approach of the book is a sort of mock debate – it offers moves and countermoves for “arming yourself to confront non-biblical worldviews” (the subtitle).

The course is based on a teaching resource book and CD. The resource book gives background information and “teaching text” for the parent or leader. The CD contains printable lessons plans for a variety of settings, including homeschooling, youth groups, Sunday School classes, and private classrooms. A separate video is available that can be used to introduce each lesson, particularly in a group setting. I had my students read the teacher resource after I presented the lesson.

There are four sections. The first one discusses worldviews in conflict. The rest of the sections cover the three major worldviews confronting young people – secular humanism, postmodern Marxism, and cosmic humanism (New Age thinking). The lessons assume that students have a basic understanding of a biblical worldview, so if that is not the case, you will want to do the Thinking Like a Christian course first.

The text does reinforce the fact that a biblical worldview is reasonable, while it shows how unrealistic other worldviews can be. I especially appreciated the way it demonstrated how New Age and Marxist thinking can lead us astray if we’re not careful. Some of the ideas can sound good at first, but when you think them through, you realize how illogical they are.
