Learning Goals - Primary Level

There is no one way to homeschool. There is no set curriculum or listing of what must be covered at each grade. Your goals for your homeschooling will be based on your family’s view of education and your child’s needs and interests. The following is a sample listing of typical learning areas for the high school level. Use it as a guide only. You can choose those areas that you want to cover with your child each year and list them as your academic goals.

Purpose of the Primary Years (K-3rd Grade): learning basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic, and exploring other subjects.

Language Arts
  • Automating colors, numbers, and common objects
  • Learning to read – automating decoding skills, very basic comprehensionn
  • Basic comprehension skills: who, what, where, when, why, how; main story line or main point
  • Following simple directions
  • Basic punctuation and capitalization
  • Recognizing basic word parts
  • Alphabetizing
  • Learning handwriting
  • Introduction to spelling – learning very basic encoding skills, recognizing simple spelling patterns, basic rules
Arithmetic
  • Learning to count
  • Learning numbers
  • Learning place value
  • Doing simple addition and subtraction
  • Learning money and value
  • Learning about measurement
  • Learning to tell time
  • Learning the calendar
  • Identifying shapes
  • Looking for similarities and differences
Science
  • Exploring natural world
  • Recognizing five senses
  • Using observation skills
  • Recognizing characteristics
  • Recognizing living and nonliving
  • Recognizing simple classifications of natural world
History
  • Recognizing basic units of society – individual, family, neighborhood, community, church, authority
  • Recognizing basic elements of society - customs, housing, transportation, government, business
  • Recognizing passing of time and time periods
  • Recognizing different physical features – land, water, sky
  • Recognizing maps and globes
  • Knows own city, state, and nation
  • Exploring different time periods
  • Exploring different ways of living
  • Exploring different areas of the world
Bible
  • Recognizing God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit
  • Recognizing Bible as God’s Word and story of His interactions with mankind
  • Recognizing basic parts of Bible
  • Recognizing major people and events of the Bible
  • Recognizing basic need for redemption
  • Recognizing need for relationship with God
  • Recognizing role of prayer in life
Electives
  • Singing simple songs
  • Recognizing beat and rhythm
  • Recognizing different sounds and instruments
  • Using simple actions to tell a story
  • Using colors
  • Using art tools – scissors, glue, paint, colored pencils, crayons
  • Drawing basic lines, curves, and shapes
  • Developing basic movements for physical activity
Life Skills
  • Following simple directions
  • Recognizes why rules are necessary and importance of obedience
  • Recognizes right and wrong
  • Self-control
  • Sharing
  • Basic manners
  • Basic safety precautions
  • Basic hygiene
  • Simple chores
