Learning Goals - Intermediate Level

There is no one way to homeschool. There is no set curriculum or listing of what must be covered at each grade. Your goals for your homeschooling will be based on your family’s view of education and your child’s needs and interests. The following is a sample listing of typical learning areas for the high school level. Use it as a guide only. You can choose those areas that you want to cover with your child each year and list them as your academic goals.

Purpose of the Intermediate Years (Grades 6-8): mastery of basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic, with exposure to more details in all other subjects; basic knowledge and framework for understanding.

Language Arts
  • Mastery of basic parts of speech
  • Exposure to detailed parts of speech
  • Mastery of punctuation and capitalization
  • Mastery of basic grammar rules such as plurals, possessives, agreement
  • Understanding verb tenses
  • Mastery of basic sentence structures and writing good sentences
  • Mastery of paragraph construction
  • Practice in forms of writing
  • Practice with word usage
  • Developing vocabulary
  • Mastery of basic comprehension skills
  • Developing thinking and analysis skills in reading
  • Recognizing elements of literature – plot, setting, characters, theme, flow of action
  • Mastery of basic spelling patterns and rules
  • Mastery of basic study skills
  • Developing study and research skills
Arithmetic
  • Mastery of basic number theory and arithmetic terms
  • Mastery of arithmetic operations
  • Mastery of fractions, percents, decimals
  • Mastery of order of operations
  • Practice of properties of math
  • Mastery of word problems
  • Mastery of geometric shapes and terms
  • Practice of geometric constructions
  • Mastery of measurement
  • Practice of conversions in measurement
  • Practice of real-life math skills
  • Continued exposure to math concepts such as ratio, statistics, probability, graphs, sets
  • Develop use of calculator
  • Develop mental math skills
Science
  • Continued exposure to fields of science
  • Exposure to more detailed principles, concepts and terms in fields of science
  • Practice of scientific method
History
  • Mastery of elementary details of own city, state, US Government, US geography
  • Continued exposure to key events and people in historical time periods
  • Basic understanding of framework of US and world history
  • Basic knowledge of world geography
  • Can apply themes of geography to studies
  • Continued exposure to cultures
Bible
  • Continued exposure to parts of Bible
  • Basic elements of Bible study
  • Continued exposure to doctrines of the Bible
  • Continued exposure and practice of principles of Christian living
Electives
  • Continued exposure to fine arts
  • Exploring interests and talents
  • Development of specific talents and abilities
  • Practice healthy lifestyle
  • Developing habit of physical fitness
Life Skills
  • Mastery of basic household chores
  • Continued exposure to household maintenance and management
  • Using basic tools
  • First aid
  • Practice financial management skills
  • Learning coping strategies for opposite learning style
  • Practice communication and social skills
