Sample Course Description — Unstructured Course: Real-Book & Project
Course: Photography Credit: 1.0 Grade: 11th
Description:
This is a one-year high school elective course designed to give the student practical experience in the field of digital photography. The student will learn principles of good photography, selecting cameras and other equipment, the basics of image editing, using Photoshop, how to restore old photos, and printing digital images. The student will be expected to become familiar with his own digital camera, take pictures that apply the tips from the text, be able to define the terms in the glossary, and produce a portfolio of the photographs (minimum of 20 pages).

The course consists of eight units: Book 1- Digital Photography Overview, Book 2 – Building Your Digital Photography Studio, Book 3 – Using Digital SLRs, Book 4 – Taking Great Pictures, Book 5 – Basics of Image Editing, Book 6 – Editing with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, Book 7 – Restoring Old Photos, and Book 8 – Printing and Sharing Your Digital Images. Curriculum:
  • Busch, David. D. Digital Photography: All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies (3rd ed., eight reference books in one). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley Publishing, Inc., 2006.
Assessment:
  • Completion of each unit of textbook, 100 points each = 800 points (100 points for each unit)
  • Oral quiz on parts of camera = 100 points
  • Oral quiz on glossary terms = 200 points
  • Portfolio Project = 900 points
          TOTAL 2000 points

The minimum requirements of the portfolio are examples of:
  • photographic triage – including fixing red eye, correcting color, and removing or adding content
  • use of zoom
  • focus range
  • stopping action with shutter speed
  • cropping
  • underexposed image, correctly exposed image, overexposed image (same subject)
  • close-up
  • framing
  • perspective
  • center of interest
  • vertical and horizontal orientations
  • use of background images
  • rule of thirds
  • incorporating direction and movement
  • using straight lines and curves
  • different light sources and directions (same image)

Grades for this portion of the course will be assigned as follows:
  • 1800 - 2000 points = A
  • 1600 - 1799 points = B
  • 1400 - 1599 points = C
