News Items February 1, 2010 |
A series of articles published December 17, 2009 by the Detroit News seems to be opposed to the Legislature's recognition of parental rights.
Based on an article of child abuse, the author contends that Michigan's homeschooling laws are too lax and that more regulation is required.
According to the headlines, homeschooling puts kids at risk.
Michigan's Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a not-for-profit think tank that provides accurate and timely analysis of critical policy issues, examined that statement. Their conclusion: the facts indicate otherwise. To view the complete article, “Safer at Home?” by Ms. Hannah K. Mead, click on either of the following links: Safer at Home? A reprint of the Mackinac Center's article on our Homeschooling Resource Center's website or The original Safer at Home? article on the Mackinac Center's website. A similar article was released by Dr. Brian D. Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute in response to a controversial piece published by a professor on The Harms of Homeschooling. You can view Dr. Ray's detailed response at: http://www.nheri.org/Latest/The-Harms-of-Homeschooling-Where-Are-the-Premises.html. We offer these links so that yo can be aware of what is being said about homeschooling and be prepared to give an answer (see 1 Peter 3:15). Even though we are not “of the world,” we are “in the world” and need to understand the atmosphere in which we operate.
