As unemployment figures and home foreclosures continue to rise, the state of the economy is affecting families across the nation, and the educational community in particular. Not only are public schools slashing budgets to make ends meet, but private schools are having to close due to lack of students.
According to an article written by Elizabeth Stuart and posted in the Deseret News March 23, 2009, tough times are hitting homeschoolers as well. Families are having to cut corners and be creative with their budget, but they are making a way to continue to homeschool. “The reasons parents home-educate are not passing, faddish things,” says Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute. The article reports that before the recession the ranks of home-school students had been growing by an estimated 8 percent annually. The latest federal figures from 2007 put the total around 1.5 million, although that number is based on applying the numbers from states that must register to all other states. “Most parents and educators predict the overall recession will actually boost the trend," reports Stuart. The articles continues that with the high cost of private-school tuition and the nature of a public school education, many people are looking to home school as an alternative.
