As of the first of August, over thirty states have adopted the Common Core Standards set by the federal government. This should come as no surprise since the states must accept the standards as an “all-or-nothing” enterprise. The states cannot pick and choose from among the recommended benchmarks, based on what the people think is important to cover. To further “encourage” the states to adopt the standards, Title 1 funding – a primary source of monies for financially-strapped school districts – is tied to the adoption process. Why are such extreme stipulations deemed necessary?
