Common Core Review

Thirty six states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core Standards set by the federal government as of October 1st. When we teach critical thinking skills to our children, one of the basic concepts is to analyze the underlying assumptions behind any initiative, evidence, or statements.

Cathy Duffy, a longtime homeschooling advocate and curriculum reviewer, points out that there are two underlying assumptions to the standards movement: (1) that every child is capable of learning the identical information at the same time as every other child, and (2) that all the standards selected by each state are academically sound and worthwhile. Even if you have not taken the time to read the Common Core Standards (www.corestandards.org), any homeschooling parent with more than one child can tell you no two children learn at the same pace.
