21st Century Skills

It's the new buzz in education: 21st century skills. It's at the heart of the federal government's push for core standards. It's also the “new and improved” version of Goals 2000 and School-to-Work initiatives from previous administrations.

The idea is that the new century requires a new approach to education, particularly given the globalization of the world's economy. Forget hard-core knowledge. The focus here is on soft skills. They're soft because no one can seem to pin them down clearly; they're fuzzy goals that depend largely on the mindset the educators want to instill in their charges.
