Keeping Focus December 1, 2009 |
This is the miracle of the Christmas season – that Jesus Christ would leave the perfectness of Heaven...to come to an imperfect world...as a perfect man...to reconcile imperfect human beings to the Father. He became the Father's firstborn “among the dead” to bring many brethren into the family of God (Romans 8:29; Colossians 1:18). He came to reproduce Himself (Romans 12:5).
As we take a break from our lesson plans and curriculum to celebrate the Reason for the Season and consider why Christ came to earth, may we also ponder our purpose for homeschooling. This month's quote reminds us of the great impact of the teacher. We teach what we know. Sometimes we have to relearn what we knew in order to teach it; often times learning right along with our students. As we share our experiences and interact with our students, we also reproduce ourselves to a certain extent. We pass along our family heritage, our spiritual heritage, our values and beliefs, our character, and our habits. That's why it's so important that our children see us reading for enjoyment, reading our Bible and having personal devotions, walking in love and forgiveness, looking up something we don't know, staying true to our beliefs...in short, living our faith daily and remaining teachable. The Christmas season reminds us that our teaching doesn't stop there. Our goal should be to reproduce who Christ is in our children. Christ came with a purpose, and He fulfilled it. God has given each of our children a divine destiny, a purpose to fulfill. Our job is to train them up in that calling (Proverbs. 22:6; Psalm 139:13-14; Jeremiah 1:5). We teach what we know – the academics, knowledge of facts, figures, and events. We teach the skills necessary to live life successfully. Next we teach understanding – knowing how and why this knowledge can be applied. Then we teach wisdom so that our children can use this knowledge and understanding in any situation they encounter. As Christian parents, we teach godly wisdom so that our children can use this knowledge and understanding in a godly manner, in a way that brings glory and honor to the Father. As Christ did. Luke 2:52 says that as a child Jesus “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” That's our general purpose in homeschooling. Our specific purpose is to enable each of our children to realize their unique design and be true to God's call and purpose. As Jesus did. |
